Law Clerkship

The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office (CCPO) employs law students who are working for school credit and paid law students. Law clerks typically work between 12 to 40 hours a week during the school year and full time during the summer. Law clerks are assigned to various units within the CCPO including the major trial unit, the general felony unit, the G.O.L.D. unit, the appeals unit, the economic crime unit, the juvenile justice unit, the civil unit, and the children and family services unit.

Undergraduate & Graduate Internships

The CCPO also both for credit and paid students in undergraduate and/or graduate school. Interns typically work between 12 to 40 hours a week during the school year and full time during the summer. Interns are assigned to various units within the CCPO including the major trial unit, communications unit, crime strategies unit, and juvenile justice unit.

Student Shadow

Student shadows are always unpaid high school or college students looking to shadow the CCPO. Student shadows get to follow a prosecutor or professional staff member around, for a time frame of two weeks or less, to see if the legal field or related unit is a right fit.

Responsibilities & Benefits

Depending on the unit to which students are assigned, clerks may draft legal documents. Clerks may also organize files for trials, observe witness interviews, provide investigative support, create PowerPoint presentations for trials, compile exhibits, and observe trials and arguments. Good legal research and writing skills are essential. As an intern at the CCPO, students will generally do research, listen to jail calls, watch body camera footage, help prepare press conferences and media releases, draft social media content and help prepare for community events. Benefits of paid clerking and or interning include pro-rated sick time and OPERS. Generally unpaid clerks and interns often return for additional semesters as paid.
